Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
