EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
